2010-09-02 A Native Lad A Native Lad is a new graphic novel by Sarah Hurst that sheds light on the modern history of Alaska. 2010-08-30 Kids These Days! debuts August 31 at 2pm on KSKA-FM Kids These Days!, a new one-hour radio show will begin airing every Tuesday on KSKA-FM 91.1 and translator stations starting on August 31, 2010 at 2 pm, with a rebroadcast at 7pm. 2010-08-25 School Climate and Connectedness School Climate and Connectedness and Culturally Responsive Continuum. 2010-08-25 Improving Academic Achievement through Improving School Climate A paper given by the American Institutes for Research (AIR) at an American Educational Research Association annual meeting uses Alaska data from SCCS to add to the national literature on the association of climate and connectedness and academic achievement. 2010-08-20 People’s Garden School Pilot Program The USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has just announced the availability of $1 million for a people’s Garden School Pilot Program. The purpose is to teach students about agriculture production practices, diet and nutrition, and other positive impacts of school gardens. 2010-08-17 Best Beginnings working to expand Imagination Library Best Beginnings is working to expand Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library throughout Alaska. So far, over 30 communities have completed 51 projects and ICE has shared more than $25,000. 2010-08-05 Fairbanks student gardeners reap a harvest of education The work-educational program, run by Calypso Farm and Ecology Center, includes six school gardens worked by about 100 student workers between 12 and 18 years old. These people represented the villages of Barrow, Atqasuk, Anaktuvuk Pass, Wainwright, Point Hope, Kaktovik, and Point Lay. 2003-06-27 Big Feelings in Small Children Jay (a pseudonym) has a hard time with anger. It wells up in him relentlessly and any little thing can trigger an explosion from him.I have learned with Jay and many other kids, that it’s really important to give them a chance to express themselves and to really listen to them, one on one. They can only hear you when their own feelings are not so intense. We need to take the time, help them find solutions to their problems, and allow them to feel satisfied at working through the bad things that happen. Their feelings are real and we need to honor them.” 2003-06-27 Calling on a Virtue The language of virtues is powerful.
