Alaska ICE Partners 2-23-2010
Anchorage School District's Safe and Drug Free Schools (SDFS) is working with specific schools to pilot efforts to build developmental assets among students and increase academic achievement. Another major initiative includes working with young people to pilot efforts to increase developmental assets in themselves and their peers. The Anchorage School District Safe Drug Free Schools has a staff of highly trained youth development specialists who serve as trainers and consultants to the administration and staff. Together they help the faculty and staff of ASD schools improve school climate, increase school bonding, enhance students' social and emotional skills and build on the strengths of our young people. Spirit of Youth is dedicated to creating and promoting opportunities for youth involvement in their communities by increasing civic engagement, building leadership and providing media recognition for the positive contributions youth are making statewide. Visit their website at www.spiritofyouth.org to learn more about the great things happening around the state through the work of Spirit of Youth.
Becky Judd, M.A.T, has established a solid reputation as a prevention and youth advocate across multiple state agencies. The focus of her work has been collaborative, cross-disciplinary prevention and youth development policies, practices, and media efforts. DHSS partnered with AASB in 1998 to create the book Helping Kids Succeed - Alaskan Style. Becky works with state agencies and local organizations to incorporate the concepts of positive youth development and Asset Building into programs and services for children and youth, which benefits not only Alaska ICE but all Alaskans. Through a partnership between the United Way of Anchorage and the Association of Alaska School Boards, United Way is now available to provide developmental assets training in Anchorage. United Way and Alaska ICE will provide this training at no cost to any interested group. For more informiation on United Way of Anchorage, go to www.uway.ak.org
Fairbanks and its surrounding area was the site of a very active community-wide initiative in asset building to promote positive youth development and a positive image of youth in the community. Assets for Interior Alaskan Youth or "AIAY" began in October 2001 and ran successfully until December 2009. AIAY worked toward four aims: to create awareness, provide technical assistance, provide resources, and to promote a more positive image of youth in the community. In boarding schools across the state, much care is taken to hire the best instructors and administrative staff, but not much focus had been put onto the hiring of the housing staff. Galena school district and Alaska ICE worked to create supportive, encouraging and caring housing environments in boarding schools at Nenana, Sitka, and Galena through efforts that ended in June of 2008. Click on the link above to read some of the stories shared by the amazing members of the Resiliency in Residence Life staff.
Alaska ICE began more focused efforts to build assets in small children with the book Helping Little Kids Succeed - Alaskan Style, which focuses on asset building in children aged 0-6. We expanded that focus through a two-year partnership with the Association for the Education of Young Children - Southeast Alaska (AEYC-SEA) that started in 2004. AEYC-SEA's mission is to encourage excellence through leadership, advocacy and education for the needs and rights of all young children in our communities.
