Executive Director

Carl Rose has devoted most of his adult life to improving public schools and advocating for the youth of Alaska. Since being elected to the Skagway School Board as a young businessman in 1974, rising to president of the AASB in 1983, and serving in his current position since 1987, Rose has participated in every major education innovation in Alaska. Today, AASB is one of the most prominent organizations in Alaska public education, representing 53 local school districts and working with many partner organizations to promote the education, health, welfare and safety of children and youth. Under his leadership, AASB has matured from a small non-profit with limited responsibilities into statewide organization that advocates for Alaska’s children.

Joseph Reeves  (jreeves©aasb•org)  

Associate Executive Director

Joseph Reeves has worked with school boards since 1986. He was the Director of Board Development and Superintendent Search Services for the New York State School Boards Association before joining AASB in 1998. As Associate Executive Director Joseph facilitates the operation of all AASB services and functions. He also is the primary contact for Policy Services. Joseph has a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration.

Timi Tullis  (ttullis©aasb•org)  

Director Membership Services

Timi Tullis’ responsibilities include planning conferences and workshops aligned to Board Standards, facilitating in-district workshops, as well as the development of on line workshops for board members. Timi led the Alaska ICE Resiliency in Residence Life Project for six years, helping to incorporate the assets framework into Alaska’s boarding high schools and communities throughout Alaska and was the Program Manager for Alaska ICE project working with partner organizations across the state. She presented at the NSBA President’s Retreat in the summer of 2007 sharing the Community Engagement work that Alaska ICE has done in the state of Alaska. Timi has an MA in Education from Michigan State University.

Norm Wooten  (nwooten©aasb•org)  

Director of Quality Schools/Quality Students (QS2)

Norm Wooten has served on the Kodiak Island Borough Board of Education since 1990. He has served in numerous positions and various committees, including five terms as president, a role he currently holds. His service with AASB began in 1993 when he was first elected to the board, where he served until 2009, twice as president. Norm was also the president of the National School Boards Association for 2007-2008. In 2009, he joined the AASB staff as the Director of QS2.

Bob Whicker  (rwhicker©aasb•org)  

Director of the Consortium for Digital Learning (CDL)

With a BA/BS in business administration/physical education, Bob served in seven Alaska school districts as a teacher/coach, principal, charter school and home school program director for 21 years. In his last position he was superintendent of the Denali Borough SD, where he implemented a sustainable 1-to-1 laptop program for all students in grades 6-12. Bob served as a consultant to school districts on use and implementation of technology programs, including parent communication, staff and school evaluation, online resources and differentiation of instruction with Apple Computer. He assisted in development, promotion and implementation of AASB’s CDL since its inception.

Chief Editor

John Greely is an experienced journalist and writer whose duties include planning the content for all major AASB publications and website, supporting staff involved in legislative activities, developing position papers, special publications and generating research for members and staff. He also conducts salary and issue surveys, tracks labor relations information and conducts communications workshops for member districts.


Diana Miller  (dmiller©aasb•org)  

Business Manager

Diana Miller has over 28 years of accounting experience, including 23 at AASB. She is responsible for preparation of the AASB budget and annual audits, financial reports, reconciling expenses and receipts for all grants, including our multi-year Alaska ICE and Consortium for Digital Learning grants. She monitors the writing and progress of the budget for all grants and prepares grant specific financials, draws and reporting to granting agencies.. She also supervises the accounting staff and all aspects of the business office. Other duties include meeting coordinator and negotiating with hotels for all AASB meetings and conferences.

Ildi Nylen  (inylen©aasb•org)  

Executive Administrative Assistant

Ildi schedules appointments and coordinates travel for the Executive Director. She coordinates and provides general support to the superintendent search facilitator, including communications with applicants, maintenance of confidential applicant files, coordinating logistics with client districts and search finalists. Ildi also assists with Policy Development Services by processing rough drafts to final copy and coordinating the completion of policy manual contract work with district personnel. She assists the AASB Board of Directors with travel at the state and national level.

Administrative Assistant

Kristen provides logistical coordination and general support to AASB and Alaska ICE and offers a warm, enthusiastic approach to managing the daily responsibilities of the office. A welcome addition to our team in November 2011, Kristen has a natural ability to multi-task and to keep the office staff organized and effective.

Alaska Initiative for Community Engagement

Director of Alaska ICE

Sally Rue brings over 30 years of professional experience in the fields of community planning and public participation in both the private and public sectors. Sally also brings over 20 years of personal involvement in Alaska education: as an active parent volunteer, former Juneau School Board member (and thus member of AASB from 1992-1998), and a member of the Alaska Board of Education and Early Development from 2000-2002. Alaska ICE’s community engagement work puts her professional and personal experience and skills to work in support of Alaska’s kids.

Public Information Coordinator, Project Coordinator

For over 30 years Steve Nelson has provided communications, public relations, and project management services to nonprofit organizations, private industry, broadcasters, advertising agencies, the Alaska Legislature and three Alaska governors. He joined the Association of Alaska School Boards in 2004 and has assumed lead roles in two AASB initiatives: Public Information Coordinator of the Alaska Initiative for Community Engagement (Alaska ICE) and Project Coordinator of the Consortium for Digital Learning (CDL).

Programs Manager

Lori Klein serves as the Programs Manager for the Alaska ICE team. Lori has a over a decade of program management experience in public education and non profits. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in speech and language therapy and a Master’s Degree in higher education.

Bridget Smith  (bsmith©aasb•org)  

Community Engagement Educator

Bridget Smith has more than a decade of experience working with families as an adult educator with the Southeast Regional Resource Center, and many years of Alaskan experience, from teaching in McGrath to serving as Adjunct Professor at UAS. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in education from the University of Alaska and a Master’s Degree in psychology from Catholic University of America, has taught English in China, and has written a number of books, articles, and essays.

Jenni Lefing  (jlefing©aasb•org)  

Community Engagement Educator

Jenni Lefing has worked in the non-profit sector in rural and urban communities for over 10 years. This experience includes program coordination, research and evaluation and group facilitation for a variety of community development issues. She holds a Master’s Degree in Sustainable Development from the SIT Graduate Institute, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Service Studies from Cornell University.

Claire Richardson has more than 25 years experience in journalism, government public relations, education and non-profit agency outreach and advocacy. She joins AASB as a Community Engagement Educator with Alaska ICE and is excited about working with school boards, superintendants, parents and community members across Alaska.  Claire has a Masters in Pastoral Studies from Seattle University and has worked with KNOM Radio in Nome, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Juneau School District, and the Office of the Governor.

Accountant

June Johnson is responsible for processing accounts payable and accounts receivable.  She also keeps track of staff timesheets, medical and leave.


Ryan Aguilar  (raguilar©aasb•org)  

Communications Specialist

Ryan Aguilar serves as writer/editor for the Alaska ICE team. Along with researching, writing and editing original material to support the efforts of Alaska ICE, he also collects, sorts and reviews inspiring stories and informational materials from Alaskans around the state, for inclusion and publication on the Alaska ICE website and within other outreach materials.

Resiliency/Youth Development Specialist with the Division of Behavioral Health for the State of Alaska

Becky Judd, M.A.T, has established a solid reputation as a prevention and youth advocate across multiple state agencies. The focus of her work has been collaborative, cross-disciplinary prevention and youth development policies, practices, and media efforts. Becky works with state agencies and local organizations to incorporate the concepts of positive youth development and Asset Building into programs and services for children and youth, which benefits not only Alaska ICE but all Alaskans.
